South Carolina Reportedly Begins Search For New Athletic Director

South Carolina reportedly begins search for new athletic director

Bob Martin stepping down after 10 seasons on the job

South Carolina is reportedly beginning its search for a new athletic director. Current athletic director Bob Martin is stepping down after 10 seasons on the job. Martin has been with the university for 22 years overall, serving in various roles before being promoted to athletic director in 2012.

Martin's tenure saw success and controversy

Martin's tenure as athletic director was marked by both success and controversy. The Gamecocks won three national championships during his time, in women's basketball, women's track and field, and women's soccer. However, the football program struggled under Martin's leadership, going 66-72 overall and 34-50 in SEC play.

Football struggles led to criticism

The football program's struggles led to criticism of Martin, and some fans called for his firing. However, Martin was able to keep his job, and he made several coaching changes in an effort to turn the program around. The Gamecocks showed some improvement in 2022, finishing 8-5 and winning the Duke's Mayo Bowl.

Martin to remain in advisory role

Martin will remain with the university in an advisory role. He will help with the transition to a new athletic director and will also work on special projects for the university president. South Carolina is expected to begin its search for a new athletic director immediately.
