Ayrton Senna remembered at Imola 30 years after tragic death
Drivers join memorial run to mark anniversary
IMOLA, Italy -- Sebastian Vettel was fighting back the tears after driving Ayrton Senna's 1993 McLaren around the Imola circuit on Thursday, 30 years after the Brazilian legend's death. The Brazilian and Austrian flags were laid out in memory of Senna and Roland Ratzenberger, who also died during the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix. Drivers joined a memorial run around the track on Thursday evening to mark the anniversary of the tragic events.
A powerful gesture
The gesture is a rather powerful one given the events of 1994. Senna was killed on the seventh lap of the race when his Williams car left the track and hit a concrete wall at the Tamburello corner. Ratzenberger had died the day before during qualifying. Thomas Maher 01 May 2024 400 PM Adrian Newey recounted his memories of Ayrton Senna's tragic Imola accident in an interview with The Race.
