John Anthony Tenta Jr., known professionally as Earthquake in the wrestling world and as Tenta in sumo, was born on June 22, 1963, in St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada. He initially pursued wrestling at Louisiana State University (LSU) before venturing into professional wrestling.
Professional Wrestling Career
Earthquake made his professional wrestling debut in 1989 for World Championship Wrestling (WCW). He became renowned for his massive size and signature move, the "Earthquake Splash," which involved jumping off the top rope onto his opponents. In 1990, he joined the World Wrestling Federation (WWF), where he feuded with Hulk Hogan and other top stars.
Sumo Wrestling Career
In 1993, Tenta embarked on a sumo wrestling career in Japan, where he adopted the ring name Tenta. He achieved great success, reaching the rank of makushita 1 and competing in top tournaments. Tenta's involvement in sumo brought global attention to the sport.
Later Years and Legacy
After retiring from sumo in 1996, Tenta returned to professional wrestling in the United States. He continued to perform until 2004, when he retired due to health issues. John Tenta passed away on June 7, 2006, at the age of 42, leaving behind a significant legacy in both wrestling and sumo.
