Syria Earthquake Kills Over 5,951

14,500 Injured in 7.8 Magnitude Quake

Over 40,000 Deaths Across Turkey and Syria

A devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck southern Turkey and northwestern Syria on Monday, killing over 5,951 people and injuring 14,500 in Syria alone. The quake, which occurred at 04:17 TRT (01:17 UTC), has led to widespread destruction and a humanitarian crisis in both countries.

The earthquake affected a large swath of Syria's northwest, including areas controlled by the Syrian government and opposition. The Syrian Health Ministry reported that the majority of the deaths and injuries occurred in the provinces of Aleppo, Idlib, Hama, and Latakia.

The United Nations said that it had sent its first aid convoy into opposition-controlled Syria since the earthquake hit. The convoy reportedly included food, medical supplies, and shelter materials for thousands of people.

International aid organizations have expressed concern about the impact of the earthquake on vulnerable populations in Syria, including those who have been displaced by the country's ongoing civil war. The earthquake has further strained Syria's already struggling humanitarian system.

The death toll is expected to rise as rescue operations continue and more information becomes available. The earthquake is one of the deadliest in Syria in recent years and has caused widespread devastation and suffering.
