Tropical Storm Watch In Effect For Wilkinson County Until Early Tuesday

Watches and Warnings

As of 8 a.m. CST, the National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a tropical storm watch for Wilkinson County, Mississippi, in effect until early Tuesday morning. A tropical storm watch means that tropical storm conditions are possible within the next 48 hours.

Current Conditions

At 8 a.m. CST, the center of Tropical Storm Barry was located about 200 miles south-southeast of New Orleans, Louisiana, and was moving west-northwest at 16 mph. Barry has maximum sustained winds of 40 mph.

Forecast

Barry is expected to continue to strengthen as it moves west-northwest, and is forecast to become a hurricane by Monday night. The storm is expected to make landfall along the Louisiana coast on Monday night or early Tuesday morning. Heavy rainfall and flooding are the main threats from Barry. Rainfall totals of 6 to 12 inches are expected across much of southern Mississippi, with isolated maximum amounts of 18 inches possible. Flash flooding is also a concern, especially in areas that have already received heavy rainfall in recent weeks.

Preparations

Residents in Wilkinson County should monitor the storm's progress and be prepared to take action if necessary. The NWS recommends having an emergency plan in place, including an evacuation route and a list of supplies. Residents should also secure loose outdoor objects and bring in any outdoor furniture or decorations. If flooding is a concern, residents should move valuables to higher ground.
